Per information from Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have lost their lives while in custody since October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has indicated that the actual toll is likely significantly higher, due to hundreds of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Report Findings

A recent report tracked fatalities caused by physical violence, failure to provide medical care, and starvation. Analysts used transparency petitions, autopsy findings, and interviews with legal representatives, activists, family members, and eyewitnesses.

Official sources disclosed comprehensive information only for the initial 240 days of the hostilities. Throughout these months, reported numbers reveal an unprecedented fatality rate among detained Palestinians, averaging a single fatality each 96 hours.

Recent Figures

Israeli defense forces last updated data on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities in September 2024. Analysts documented a further 35 casualties in custody following these dates and verified them with government bodies.

Although the total number of fatalities charted being substantially larger than other recent estimates, it almost certainly fails to capture the full scale of Palestinian loss, according to the director of the prisoners and detainees department.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a greater figure of casualties than earlier indicated, this is not the entire story,” he explained. “We are certain that there are yet detainees who perished in detention that we don’t know about.”

Civilian Casualties

Classified official information suggests that the largest portion of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who died in detention were non-combatants, based on a related investigation.

In May of the current year, a armed services record monitoring all militants in Gaza, a list of in excess of 47,000 named individuals, documented just 21 fatalities in confinement. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in jail.

Notable Incidents

Several casualties in detention have been widely reported, including a middle-aged hospital director who died in detention after four months in custody.

A detainee incarcerated with the victim testified that he was led to the exercise area by correctional officers immediately preceding his demise, obviously hurt and exposed from the waist down. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and armed services gave investigators with the number of deaths in custody, and basic additional information including the site where they died, but without the detainees’ identities.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mostly detainees from Gaza, investigators could not to match the limited information provided by officials to a fatality documented by human rights groups, either through statements from former inmates or coverage in the press.

The detainees’ families could be unaware about their family members’ fatalities either, as Israel has made it difficult to locate detainees it is confining. Over half a year at the beginning of the conflict, the defense forces refused to give basic information about the status of many of individuals confined in Gaza, effectively carrying out a practice of forced disappearance, as stated by the advocacy organization.
