Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will enjoy a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own steady comeback to official duties following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.

Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for food banks.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by a major network on Christmas Eve.
